Terror Cinema

I know no animation, manga or comic that hade ver scared me out. I understand that works like Berserk, Flesh Colored Horror, Disk, Yami no Koe, The Horror Mansion, Attack on Titan (etc.) fit into the horror/terror/suspense genre.

I feel that manga, anime and comic are more into the gore subgenre, inside of the horror genre. Pictures horrorize the audience, making it stop staring at the screen because of the strength of the scene. Gore has become real popular, especially between the youngest otakus. But we must remember that everything comes from the ancient Cinema.

Kurenai Sanshiro Review

Kurenai Sanshiro, Judo Boy or as it was known in my country (Chile), Sam, King of Judo, is one of the animation TV series made by Tatsuo Yoshida en 1969, compost by 26 episodes.

This is one of the legendary series that have arrived to my country, just like most of animation series that we were able to see only on TV in that time; we never got to see the end. That brought many urban myths about the real end of the series.

Ixion Saga DT Review

It’s not hard to find animations base on a game, but this particular anime it’s almost a parody to the existence of Capcom’s game in which is based on, we’re talking about Ixion Saga DT.

Seiken no Blacksmith Review

This is the kind of series unappreciated by the fans, but very appreciated by me. A series that, from my sight should have a more extended anime and a better known series.

Death Note Review

I’m one of the few people in Reading the “Death Note” manga way before the anime appeared.
While it’s heavily raining in my town, i remember having first seen the two live-action movies based in the manga during winter. They caused such an impact in me, that every time it rains, its soundtracks sound in my head.

School Rumble Review

While I was enjoying the episodes of Bleach years ago, a few episodes of School Rumble arrived to my hands, by then, the internet wasn’t so massive and we had to get everything on Cds.
School Rumble was born in 2002 from the hands of Jin Kobayashi. With a compilation of 22 manga volumes, it was adapted for two anime series of 26 episodes each, and two series of ova, two episodes each. There’s also a manga called School Rumble Z, with 10 episodes that tell the real end of the series and two light novels written by Hiroko Tokita, but illustrated by the original author.

Plot
The plot of the series raises the lives and romantic entanglements of Yagami school students, focusing on two particular characters, Kenji Harima and Tenma Tsukamoto. The stories and situations showed pass through the absurd and the comedy, more than showing the romantic tension. The serie has been catalogued as a romantic comedy, but there’s no moment in the serie in which we can see the consummation of any of the romances lived in it.

The author’s original idea is that a delinquent, a thug, Harima Kenji, can actually falls in love. This is School Rumble’s initial premise, Harima can fight hundreds of battles and ending victorious, but he doesn’t have enough courage to declare his love to Tenma. In a similar way, Tenma is not able to declare herself in a straight way to one of her classmates, Oji Karasuma, someone extremely eccentric, whose only interest is in the curry.

Even though the two leading characters are the central wire conductors in the story, the rest of the secondary characters come to life and own leadership, making interesting all of the adventures they live.
The serie develops miss understandings, tangles and very funny situations, next to a mix of characters with love troubles, giving it a very special treat to Tenma’s friends.

Adaptations

The manga was adapted to three videogames, 2 light novels, 4 official guides and 2 theatrical live-action of the seiyuu playing their respective characters.

At its moment, I was such a big fan that I got to hear, plus the soundtracks, the Cd-Drama and even the vocal themes of the serie. School Rumble returns to the old way of showing the animations, giving it more production to everything what’s sung. The soundtrack is really nice, the first one in special, with a touch of melancholy, and a big display of happiness that the author is trying to show us in his work.

The Good Stuff
Though in the first episodes, Harima can be a really bean in the ass, over the serie, with his tangles and bad decisions, he becomes into a really fun character. The author’s sense of humor, though it may look odd sometimes, it entertains you from beginning to end, with no rest. This without considering the quantity of parodies made during all and each one of the episodes. I even understand that various fan subs that have translated the manga have even given the work of explaining the parodies in the end of each manga episode, owned to the fact that they were many.

The seiyuus, the voice actors, make a really good work giving life and personality to each one of the characters, and that’s one of the most important things in this serie, the humanity and sincerity in the characters.

The Bad Stuff

The serie’s end is one of the most awful things that can actually happen to a “mangaka”. After ending the 238 episodes of the manga, the possibility of ending in a very great way the story is given to the author with School Rumble Z that would come out once a month. Sadly, in the beginning of the publications, it was cut off and only reached 10 episodes.

In the last of these episodes, it’s shown through pictures a summary of what should’ve turn into full volumes: the story’s real end and the development of many adventures of the leading characters.
It was such an abrupt end and so not easy to understand to those who follow the manga and it’s also the reflection of-. only a few Japanese authors can end well a story and leave the fans satisfied with it.

Curiosities

There are rumors in the internet that say that Jin Kobayashi, School Rumble’s author, is married to a “half-American blond”, very like Eri Sawachika in the serie. Though it’s not a 100% sure rumor, Jin has recognized that part of the leading character is based on himself, and the serie’s adventures are based on his own experiences and his friends’.

This is information that I found in the internet (the source is not mine, the original sources belong to fanaticosdelbuenanime.blogspot.com and  japan-next.blogspot.com)
- Most of the leading characters names represent Japanese train stations (Tenma Station, Osaka; Yakumo Station, Hokkaido) or Japanese streets (Harima in Hyogo, Karasuma in Kyoto)
- Jin Kobayashi admits that some characters’’ personality were created while the manga was being published, especially Akira’s, relegated to that repeatedly appear on the cover of volume collections.

- The author also affirms that he was very reluctant in accepting an anime version of his work, but as soon as he saw it, he got so excited that he publicly congratulated to the animation studios, and even borrowed a few times his voice to small roles in some episodes.

- There was some controversy when the Japanese distributor Media Factory openly asked to the Fansub community, through emails, to abstain of making pirate versions of the serie. It was the first time that a Japanese enterprise recognized that is impossible to stop the fansub activity through legal media and appealed to morality.
- In the original comic story there’s an english character who’s always being confused with Harima, because phonetically their names are similar, Harry Mackenzie in Japanese is pronounced Harima Kenji. However, in the manga´s Spanish edition the name was switch to the name of Harry for “Ken Jiharima”, simply because in occident is costume to call people by name and last name (not by last name and name), and the joke would be lost. Notice that the order name-last name is inverted in Kenji and Harry.

-Parodies:

- In episode #1 you can see that while Karasuma, Tenma and Harima go on bike riding to school, they over pass the leading character Initial D’s Toyota Sprinter.
- During episode #3, Tenma tries to deliver a letter to Karasuma shooting him with an arrow dressed like Kikyo of Inuyasha’s serie, while she does that, Harima gets in the way and must avoid them the same way Neo avoids one of the agent’s bullets in the movie “Matrix”. In this episode we also see in a screen at the bottom of the city, the music video of “Scramble” played by Unscandal, season’s opening.
- In episode #8, when Harima is watching TV, a show appears called “Comet Wars” and it’s a real parody of Star Wars, and while the characters talk, you can see behind “R2D2” and “C3PO” and the characters that are talking are Princess Leia and Luke.
- Episode #9, begins with an action manga created by Harima, in which he´s the leading character and has many similarities both in story as in abilities with Kenshiro, leading character in “Fist of the North Star”; also as it’s seen in Harima’s fight against Karasuma, they face each other in the same way that Mewtwo and Mew do it in the “Pokemon” movie. Else while he fights, his hair turns blond, like in “Dragon Ball Z”. In the episode’s end, Harima recues Iori from drowning, being confused by a kappa, in a reference to the story “Kappa no Sempei”.
- In episode #20, Hanai begins to play a recorder, making the mice to arrive just like in “The Pied Piper of Hamelin”.

- Episode #21 starts with Hanai’s training on the mountains exactly like Jackie Chan in the movie “The Drunken Master”.
- The horse war in episode #22 begins with both sides face to face and after the sign they run and crash in the same way and sight angle in which are done the Sauron’s armies against the elves in the movie “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
- A bit after the incident with Harima’s jacket’s embroidery, in episode #24, Eri goes to the café where Yakumo works at and sitting down in front of her asks her for things that the local doesn’t sell, all of this it’s a clear parody of the interrogatory scene in the movie “Low Instincts”.
- Episode #25’s opening, is when completely changes and it’s represented like a fishermen’s song, allusion to Akira Kurosawa’s style, with hand written credits, and enkas songs.
- After helping Harima and Tenma and choosing Karasuma’s present, when he comes back to his neighborhood in train, Harima imagines that moment as a space trip. An allusion to Galaxy Express 999 of Leiji Matsumoto. The end of the scene shows a narrator’s comment and a parchment in the right corner of the screen, just like serie’s ends.

 ¿Why to see School Rumble?

School Rumble is a school unconventional comedy, it´s a real madness, full of absurd and fantastic situations. Its first season will make you laugh so much that you would want to see more episodes without a stop.

Through the work, the author tries to give us various messages: being honest, never give up, chasing your dreams, and above all, with love you can defeat every obstacle in your way.

Bleach Review

Bleach manga series has ovas, movies, its own anime series, musicals, card games, art books, novels, over twenty videogames, and it has become one of the most important series in the last decade.
I remember that in late 2004, a friend of mine brought me a DVD with some of the episodes of the Bleach animation. After watching the first twenty-seven episodes, my first thought was: “OMG, this is having the Sixth sense movie, the Dragon Ball series, Naruto, Rurouni Kenshin, monks, put it all in a juicer, and the result is Bleach”.

Claymore review

A Claymore is a broadsword wielded by two hands. In the native language of Celts, it can be translated as “big sword”, and this term was used in reference for broadswords created be the people of Scotland in the centuries 17 and 18. Although the actual use of this kind of weapon comes from the 15 century.
