Kurenai Sanshiro Review

Kurenai Sanshiro, Judo Boy or as it was known in my country (Chile), Sam, King of Judo, is one of the animation TV series made by Tatsuo Yoshida en 1969, compost by 26 episodes.

This is one of the legendary series that have arrived to my country, just like most of animation series that we were able to see only on TV in that time; we never got to see the end. That brought many urban myths about the real end of the series.

The whole story is around Sanshiro (Latin American translation, Sam), a martial artist trained at Kiujitsu Kurenai’s School. In the first episode of the series we can see his father fighting against an unknown attacker; in this battle, Sam’s dad loses his life, but this one reaches to take the crystal eye off the murderer´s face, Sam’s only clue to find him.

In the look of his father’s murderer, Sam has the company of an orphan child, Kenbo, and his loyal dog; Boke. During the 26 episodes of the series, Sam takes care of dispatching each one-eyed in his way, except for the last episode, when he learns to keep his mind in white, and reaches the absolute plenitude of a martial artist. An increase he never thought he’d get.

For the time, Kurenai Sanshiro was an animation series of great quality and details. Plus of being a good series, it was very violent; consider that Sam killed everyone who attacked him.

A curious thing of the series is that the opening was sung by the master teacher in singing and seiyuu, Mitsuko Horie, when she was only 12 years old. Another curiosity is that Sam’s Judo’s suit was made by his mother, just like the suit made by Clark Kent’s mother. (Superman)

Even if the translation makes the series seem too forced in its dialogues, it’s still an icon series to follow by all of the action and battle anime fans.
